In the Republic of Belarus, February 15 is the Day of Remembrance of the Soldiers-Internationalists. One of the sad memorable dates in the history of our people. This is the day of remembrance of all the dead, the day of expressing gratitude and deepest recognition to those, who honestly and courageously performed their military and civic duty in the Islamic State of Afghanistan.

On this day 33 years ago, the last Soviet soldier crossed the bridge of the border river Amu Darya near Termez. About 30,000 Belarusians passed on the roads of Afghanistan, 771 did not return, more than 1,500 were injured and maimed, and many remained disabled.

According to the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus dated March 26, 1998 No. 157 "On public holidays, holidays and memorable dates in the Republic of Belarus", February 15 is established as the Day of Remembrance of Internationalist Warriors. Monuments to soldiers-internationalists have been erected in many cities of Belarus.

Every year, commemorative events dedicated to this date are held throughout the country. In Minsk, traditionally - on the Island of Courage and Sorrow.
